The lower Salmon River is regulated by a hydroelectric dam in Altmar, NY that is controlled by Brookfield Renewable. When planning a fishing trip to the Salmon River it is important to check the flows to ensure a safe day on the water. At 2,000 CFS out of the dam, the Salmon River becomes quite dangerous to wade and is best fished from a drift boat.
The weather in the area can change quick, so it is best to check the weather reports consistently. Large quantities of rain or snow melt will cause a bump in flows from the dam in Altmar.
