The West Branch of the Ausable River is located in the the heart of the Adirondacks, which flows for 94 miles before it finds its way to Lake Champlain. The West Branch of the Ausable River is considered to be the best water in the Adirondacks to catch Brook, Brown, and Rainbow Trout. On your guided fly fishing trip on the West Branch of the Ausable River, we will teach you the techniques needed to effectively catch fish in the "pocket water" where many of the large fish hold. Our guided fly fishing trips on the West Branch of the Delaware can be half day trips (4 hours) or full day trips (6-8 hours).

Early Spring Fly Fishing on the West Branch of the Ausable River

In the early months of spring, the West Branch of the Ausable River is often flowing over its banks due to snow melt. During this time, it is important to use caution when fly fishing the West Branch of the Ausable River. Due to the high and cold water, the fishing is usually not the best, however anglers can be rewarded by using streamers on a sink tip line. Your efforts during this time of the year should be focused on ice-out Brook Trout on the Adirondack lakes and ponds.

Mid/Late Spring Fly Fishing on the West Branch of the Ausable River

As the water flows begin to recede from the spring runoff, the fishing will begin to pick up on the West Branch of the Ausable River. The first hatches of the year will begin to take place causing fish to feed eagerly on the surface. The main hatches this time of the year are Hendrickson, March Browns, Blue Wing Olives, and a variety of Caddisflies. When the fish are not feeding on the surface, we can target fish by nymphing and swinging streamers. The pocket water on the West Branch of the Ausable is very conducive to numerous nymphing tactics such as indicator fishing and euro nymphing. This is a good time to visit the Adirondacks and book a guided fly fishing trip on the West Branch of the Ausable River.

Early Summer Fly Fishing on the West Branch of the Ausable River

In my opinion, this is the PEAK time to fly fish the West Branch of the Ausable River. The month of June and early July produces ideal conditions that are conducive to catching fish on the West Branch of the Ausable River. The water flows are usually low enough that the entire river is wadable, giving us access to the best runs and pools. The water temperature during this time usually hovers in the high 50s, which is the optimal temperature for trout to feed heavily. This time of the year is also when the large stoneflies of the West Branch of the Ausable River begin to hatch. This can create awesome pocket water dry fly fishing with stonefly/grasshopper imitations. This is the best time to come and book a guided fly fishing trip on the West Branch of the Ausable River with a knowledgeable fly fishing guide.

All tackle will be provided EXCEPT waders and we're willing to accommodate most any reasonable request.
