Spring Fishing Report - Salmon River + Lake Ontario

After a very long, cold winter we are finally starting to see the first signs of Spring. The snow has melted and the trees have finally started budding! What does this mean for the fishing?

April is always one of the best months of the year to target Steelhead on the Salmon River. We see our fish that have spent the winter in the upper reaches of the river finally drop back down into our stretches of floatable water. This year in particular we have a large amount of fish that entered the river and are currently in the raceways of the hatchery. These fish will slowly start dropping back down into the river as the water temperatures warm up and as the water flow subsides. We are currently getting over a spell of 2,200CFS out of the dam, which is quite high but still very fishable. I expect after this final band of rain hits that the water should come down. Along with that, I am expecting some excellent Steelhead fishing in the middle to later part of the months. I still have availability for those looking to get out chasing Steelhead.

Our Lake Ontario fishery is heating up with excellent shoreline Brown Trout fishing taking place. The charter boat will be in the water and ready towards the middle part of the month. April, May and early June are simply the best times to come and catch Brown Trout on Lake Ontario. Limit catches and high quantity fish days are very possible this time of year and most often the norm. The key is to fish mud lines from the rivers and creeks in the area caused by rainfall, snowmelt, and wind. The baitfish will concentrate in these areas and the Brown Trout will be using their natural camouflage to hunt! We have a fair amount of availability for both morning and afternoon charters!
